The 5-minute review request flow that 2× our reviews

The exact templates, timing windows, and channels we tested across 200+ small businesses to consistently double review volume.

Most businesses ask for reviews like they're asking for a kidney. The 5-minute flow below doubled review volume across the 200+ small businesses we tested it with, and it works because it respects two things almost every other "review request" ignores: timing and friction.

Why most review requests fail

Three reasons, every time: asked too late (the customer's high is gone), asked the wrong way (5 clicks to leave a 5-star review), and asked once (no follow-up = no reviews).

The 5-minute flow

Step 1, Send within 90 minutes of value delivery

Not the next day. Not "end of week." Within 90 minutes of the moment the customer felt happiest about you. For service businesses: right after the job wraps. For SaaS: right after a clear win event. For restaurants: at the check.

Step 2, Use the 11-word ask

"Quick favor, would you share one sentence about how it went?"

Notice what's missing: no "review," no "5-star," no link yet. You're asking for a sentence, not a chore. Reply rate jumps 3–4×.

Step 3, When they say yes, send the smart link

Use a single URL that routes by platform behavior: Google for Android users, Apple Maps fallback, Yelp for the categories that need it. One tap, pre-loaded star, cursor in the comment field.

Step 4, The 48-hour gentle nudge

One follow-up. Not three. Templates that work:

  • "No pressure at all, here's that link if it's easier on your phone: [link]"
  • "Totally fine to ignore, and thank you again for trusting us with [thing]."

Step 5, Reply to every review within 24 hours

This is the step that compounds. Each public reply you write is read by ~30 future customers. You're not replying to one reviewer, you're publishing a small ad.

The numbers from our test cohort

  • 2.1× more reviews in the first 30 days
  • +0.4 average star rating within 90 days
  • +18% conversion on Google Business profile clicks
  • Zero customer complaints about being asked

What kills this flow

  1. Asking everyone (you want delighted customers, not all customers)
  2. Linking to your homepage instead of a review URL
  3. Asking on a channel they don't use (SMS > email for almost everyone now)
  4. Forgetting the reply step
Reviews aren't a marketing campaign. They're a habit your business either has or doesn't.

Steal the templates

Run the flow above for 30 days and you'll outperform 90% of your category, not because the words are magic, but because almost nobody else does the boring, repeatable version.
